How to use Safari web browser on iPhone

You can install other browsers from the App Store, but the web browser built into all iPhones, iPod touches and iPads is Safari.

The iOS version of Safari has been adopted from the desktop version that has been on Macs over the years, but mobile Safari is very different. For one thing, you control it by touch, not with the mouse.

Read this article to learn the basics of using Safari. For more advanced articles on using Safari, check out:

Double-tap to zoom.

To zoom in on a specific part of a webpage (magnifying the text you're reading is especially useful), simply double-tap quickly on the same part of the screen . This will enlarge that section of the page. Zoom out again with the same double tap.

Reduce / Enlarge / Reduce

For more control over what you zoom in or zoom out of, use your iPhone's multi-touch feature.

Put your index finger together with your thumb and place it over the portion of your iPhone screen you want to zoom in on . Then, drag your finger to the opposite edge of the screen. Enlarge this page. Text and images are briefly blurred so iPhone looks sharp and clear.

To zoom out a page and make things smaller , place your fingers on opposite ends of the screen and drag them towards each other ( meet in the middle of the screen ).

go to the top of the page

Drag your finger down the screen to scroll down the pages . But did you know that you can return to the top of a webpage without scrolling?

To return to the browser bar, search bar, or site navigation, simply double- tap the clock in the top center of the screen on your iPhone or iPod touch to go to the top of the page . On the first tab, Safari's address bar appears, and on the second tab, it goes right back to the top of the web page. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a shortcut similar to skipping to the bottom of the page.

Forward and backward through your history

Like other browsers, Safari keeps track of the sites you visit and lets you use the back button (and sometimes the forward button) to jump through recently visited sites and pages. There are two ways to access this feature.

  • Arrow Buttons - There are arrow buttons in the lower left corner of the screen. Tap them to move forward or backward.
  • Swipe - Swipe to move forward or backward . Swipe the left edge of the screen to move back and the right edge to move forward.

Open page in new window

There are two ways to open a new window in Safari. The first is to tap the icon in the lower right corner of the Safari window to make it look like two squares. This will make the current web page smaller, and a + (iOS 7+) or New Page button (iOS 6 and lower) will appear at the bottom .

Click the icon to open a new window . Tap the two squares again and move them up and down (iOS 7 or later) or back and forth (iOS 6 and earlier) to move between windows or

Close the window by pressing X.

In addition to opening a new blank window, links can be opened in a new window just like on a desktop computer. Here's how.

  1. Find the link you want to open in a new window .
  2. Tap the link and keep your finger off the screen .
  3. Do n't wait for a menu to pop up at the bottom of the screen giving you 5 options .
    • open
    • Open in new page
    • Add to Reading List (iOS 5+)
    • wealth
    • cancel
  4. Selecting Open in new window will open two browser windows. One is the first site you visit and the other is a new page.
  5. If you're using a device with a 3D Touchscreen ( iPhone 6S and 7 series only at the time of this writing ) , holding down a link may also pop up a preview of the linked page. When you press hard on the screen, a preview pops up and becomes the window you are browsing.

action menu in safari

The menu that looks like the menu in the bottom center of Safari is called the Actions menu. Represents all functions. Here, Add to Favorites, or the site or read the list, or create a shortcut on the home screen of the device , such as printing a page of you can find the option.

Private Browsing in Safari

Use this feature to add webs that have not been visited to your browser history. If you want to use in iOS 7 more than two rectangles to tap to open a new browser window. Tap Privacy, then choose whether to open or close all open browser windows. Follow the same steps to turn off private browsing. (In iOS 6, privacy is available through Safari settings in the Settings app.)
