Find out the exact time someone emailed you.
Gmail displays the time the message was sent relative to the current time, such as "4 hours ago". This is very helpful, but you may be in a situation where you want to know the exact date and time (especially for old emails like June 2nd).
Revealing the timestamp of a Gmail message is very easy, with a regular date you always see and hide it with just 1-2 clicks.
See when an email was sent via Gmail
Here are 3 places where you can read Gmail messages and how to see the actual date of the mail in each scenario.
on the desktop website
- With the message open, hover your mouse over the date (eg "May 29th").
- Wait for the correct date and time to be displayed.
For example, hovering the mouse over something other than 'May 29' will display a specific time like "Mon, May 27, 2017, at 8:45 AM".
Another way to do this in a desktop Web site operations, open the message and More (add that) reply is to click the down arrow next to the button. Select Show Original to see when the message was written .
From the Gmail mobile app
- Open the message you want to see the date.
- Tap the "To" line just below the sender's name.
- Details are shown below, including the sender's email address and email address as well as the full date of the sender.
Inbox by Gmail
- Open the messege in Inbox by Gmail.
- Place the mouse cursor directly over the date displayed in the header area.
- Wait for the full date and time to appear.
Inbox by Gmail, just like Gmail, displays the full original message to time-stamp it. To do so, find the date you identified in step 2, click the three vertically stacked dots, then click View Original .
