Have a little fun by customizing your Gmail screen.
Gmail has over a billion users, so it's likely a familiar site on your computer or mobile device. It is also used by the majority of midsize and startup companies. Google redesigned Gmail a few years ago with a more minimalist look, but if you want to make your Gmail pages more interesting, you can change the theme. Here's how.
How to change Gmail background
To change the theme in Gmail on your computer, follow these steps:
- Log in to Gmail and click the Settings icon in the upper-right corner of the screen .
- Click Theme from the drop-down menu .
- Choose a theme by clicking on one of the theme thumbnails. You can also choose a solid color scheme if you don't like the theme. Click the thumbnail and the theme will be applied immediately, so you can see what it will look like on your screen. If you don't like it, choose something else.
- Click Save to set the new theme as your Gmail background.
You can also upload one of your personal photos to use as your Gmail background. Just click on my picture on the theme screen . In the screen that opens, you can select an image that you have uploaded previously or click Upload Photo to send a new image. You can also click Paste URL . Add a link to an internet image on your Gmail screen.

Some images you can choose from on the Gmail theme screen have additional adjustment options. When you select an image, several icons appear below the thumbnail. You can choose one of them to personalize your image selection. they:
- Text background that can be set light or dark
- Add a vignette. In Vignette, a slider appears to adjust the vignette.
- Blur with slider to adjust which blur to apply the blur to
If you do not see this option, it is not available for the selected image.
You can go back and change the theme as often as you like.
Note: On mobile devices, you cannot change the Gmail theme only on your computer.
